Penny Black. by AlternateRaiL Penny Black. by AlternateRaiL
A series of posters I was commissioned to make for the original Victorian-era play; Penny Black.

I really wanted to go for a look that would appeal to more mainstream audiences. Being somebody who would normally never go to theatre productions, I wanted to create something that would catch my eye and make me want to find out more about the production if I saw it posted up somewhere. My reasoning behind gearing the look more away from the aesthetic of traditional period-piece theatre is that the core fan-base would want to go anyway; it's the rest you'd need to convince to make a change.

Photography was taken by Tom Cramond, who is mad talented. The collaboration went really smoothly and he delivered more than I asked for based on very loose ideas.

The playbill will be appearing soon as well.

Check out Tom Cramond's work HERE.

Oh, also, are there individual images of the top two posters? I thought both of them were especially striking...

Woho! Very nice, very eye-catching indeed! I really like how the text is almost overwhelming, but it still serves to highlight and aptly surround the character's faces.

Yeah Helvetica Extra Bold Condensed, it's really one of those fonts that can do anything.

Great stuff; Looks like the kind of thing I'd want to pick up in a shop (if it was a flyer), so they're definately interesting enough. The text works so well with the photographs too, especially how it's cut around the eyes. I'd struggle to fault these.

Cheers buddy. Positioning the text so it didn't cover too much of their faces was really challenging because I didn't get to choose the text that had to be on it.
